Unrest in Onitsha as unknown gunmen engage in a shootout with Nigerian Army soldiers.
There is serious unrest on Owerri Road in Onitsha, Anambra, as unknown gunmen engage in a shootout with Nigerian Army soldiers.
The incident occurred in the early hours of today, according to eyewitnesses, at a police and military checkpoint on a common road in Onitsha.
The ‘unknown’ gunmen stormed the checkpoint in a black van and opened fire on the security operatives, according to a video posted online by an eyewitness.
Soldiers engaged the gunmen in a heavy shoot-out that lasted several minutes, but one of the officers was unfortunately killed.
Around two members of the “unknown gang” were shot by soldiers at the same time, and one of them died while being evacuated.
When the military’s firepower became too much, the “unknown gunmen” re-entered their black van and pulled away.
If you watch the video closely, you’ll find that many Keke riders leave their tricycles on the road and allegedly flee for their lives.
In a space of one week, this is reportedly the second time ‘unknown gunmen’ are attacking security operatives along this Owerri road.
