Uzalo ‘Detective Nyawo’ Cebolenkosi Mthembu Speaks About His 2022 Comrades Marathon Experience

Cebolenkosi Mthembu who portrays Detective Nyawo in the popular South African soapie Uzalo has spoken about his experience in the ‘Ultimate Human Race’.

The Uzalo actor said he started participating in the Comrades Marathon in 2018. He revealed that it was difficult for him to finish the 90km race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

Detective Nyawo managed to finish the race in 11 hours and attributed his lack of fitness to not having enough time to prepare.

Cebolenkosi Mthembu said:

It was too hard for me this year but I managed to finish within 11 hours. Marathons are not for the faint-hearted. I had so many stops this time compared to the other years. Perhaps, not having enough time to train was the reason.

He also said he was devastated following news that fellow runner Mzamo Mthembu, had died in hospital after he collapsed while running the Comrades Marathon. Cebolenkosi Mthembu said:

This marathon is not easy. What I noticed is that most of the runners were struggling. It could happen that the two-year gap is the reason most runners found it difficult to finish

The Comrades Marathon went on a brief hiatus after Covid-19 hit South Africa in 2020. As a result, the Uzalo actor said he had stopped training for the race because he was not sure when it would be back.

Cebolenkosi Mthembu pledged that he will be physically fit for the Comrades Marathon in 2023. Mthembu said he will prepare a bit early for the 2023 edition of the ultimate human race. He said:
