UK states position on suspension of Twitter in Nigeria

Nigerians were using Twitter to perpetuate activities inimical to the corporate existence of Nigeria, hence announcing its suspension.

The UK government has spoken out against President Muhammadu Buhari’s federal government’s indefinite suspension of the microblogging site, which was announced on Twitter.

On Friday, the UK government reacted through Gill Atkinson, the UK’s High Commissioner in Nigeria.

Nigerians have the right to free speech, according to Atkinson, and the government should not stifle it.

“All Nigerians have the right to freedom of speech and the responsibility not to misuse that right.

“Any action taken by Government must be measured, proportionate and not to suppress basic freedoms.”

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed had explained that Nigerians were using Twitter to perpetuate activities inimical to the corporate existence of Nigeria, hence announcing its suspension.
