In a rather bizarre development, daring thieves are alleged to have desecrated the grave of Gertrude Mapuranga at the Unit L cemetery in Seke.

According to reports reaching iHarare, the thieves stole the tombstone from Gertrude’s grave and left the headstone only.

Mapuranga family spokesperson Mike Bhauleni confirmed the development. He said they were shocked to learn of the desecration of Gertrude’s grave when they visited her grave recently.

Bhauleni said it was devastating that someone has the nerve to temper with Gertrude’s grave.

As the economic situation worsens and covid-19 woes bite, desperate thieves are now targeting tombstones, headstones, and ornaments at graveyards. The thieves are alleged to be conniving with caretakers to rob from the dead. The thieves sell the granite stones to tombstone sculptors who revamp them and resell them to unsuspecting customers.
