Security ramped up amid possible militia threat targeting U.S. Capitol: Reports – Crime Online

U.S. Capitol Police said they received credible intel regarding a militia group that intends to attempt to breach the Capitol on Thursday.

Police said in a statement on Wednesday that they are ramping up security at the Capitol in light of the possible threat. Law enforcement reportedly increased security following the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol Building.

“Due to the sensitive nature of this information, we cannot provide additional details at this time,” the statement read.

While law enforcement declined to provide details, AP reported that the possible threat involves a far-right QAnon conspiracy theory that Trump will reassume power on March 4. Notably, March 4 was the initial inauguration day until 1937, when it was moved to January 20.

Melissa Smislova, the acting undersecretary of the Office of Intelligence and Analysis in the Department of Homeland Security, said her agency and the FBI issued a bulletin late Tuesday or early Wednesday concerning “extremists discussing March 4 and March 6,” according to The Washington Post.

ABC News reported that the FBI bulletin mentioned an extremist group called the “Three Percenters.” A source told the news outlet that the group plans to have 50,000 supporters in Washington, D.C., on or around March 4 through March 6 to overwhelm police and National Guard troops stationed at or near the Capitol Complex.

Sources also told ABC News that in light of security concerns, the House of Representatives modified their schedule on Wednesday to avoid being in session on Thursday.

It is not immediately known whether the Senate has changed their schedule as well.
