Veteran actress Zikhona Sodlaka spoke about her role as Detective Cebekhulu on Mzansi Magic’s popular telenovela DiepCity.

Sodlaka was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress In A Telenovela category in the 2022 edition of the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) held over the weekend.

Zikhona Sodlaka was nominated for her role as Mandisa in Showmax’s hit telenovela The Wife. She missed out on the award that Shaleen Surtie Richards won posthumously for her role in Arendsvlei.

Mandla N said he wants to cast Zikhona Sodlaka in a new project he is working on. The award-winning director did not reveal details of the new project.

In the interview, Zikhona Sodlaka said it was easy for her to play the role of Detective Cebekhulu on DiepCity because the stories being told are those of South Africans. She said she got her inspiration to play the role of Detective Cebekhulu on DiepCity from watching everyday South Africans.

Zikhona Sodlaka said:

So there isn’t a lot of time to prepare but because we are playing South Africans, we know them. We are in the [business] of playing people who are from here. Unless you are playing an alien or someone from outside the country. You don’t know them But I know these people. I think I study them, I see them…

She said that working with Mandla N on DiepCity was a memorable experience because he is a director who knows what he is doing. Zikhona Sodlaka said:

Firstly let it be known that your passion on set is electrifying, people need to know that. I’m gonna bounce it right back to you again, working with you I only had a taste of how you work because you are such an experienced director you know what you’re dealing with. You know who needs a push and a pull, who needs a nudge and who doesn’t need a nudge.
