Russian Clubs Challenge UEFA Ban In Court

Zenit team players

Russian clubs have filed a complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) aiming to reverse a UEFA Champions League ban.

CSKA Moscow, Zenit St Petersburg, Dynamo Moscow and PFC Sochi despite ending this year’s season in a position that would have enabled them to participate in UEFA’s tournament next season, the quartet is currently barred from the competition.

This comes after Russia was banned from all FIFA-affiliated football competitions due to president Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Zenit who were crowned champions of the Russian league took it to their website to confirm this development.

Zenit Football Club have filed an appeal against UEFA’s decision to bar Russian clubs from European competition for the 2022/23 season.

Zenit have always supported the principles stated in UEFA’s charter, stating we should play the game in the spirit of mutual respect, understanding, fair play and exclude any form of discrimination, be that political, religious, racial or indeed any form of prejudice.

Zenit Football Club are supported in this action by FC Dynamo Moscow, FC Sochi and PFC CSKA Moscow in appealing against the decision of UEFA, and respectfully request this appeal to CAS be dealt with expeditiously.

Former Zenit star Konstantin Lepekhin shared his view concerning the matter. Lepekhin is not optimistic that UEFA will overturn its decision.

Of course, when an illegal decision is made, it is necessary to challenge it legally. But understanding how everything works in the world, any illegal decision somehow becomes legal by rearranging two or three words somehow,” Lepekhin claimed. “Therefore, I have doubts about the fact that it will be possible to achieve something.

Perhaps, if they have absolutely nothing to oppose our statements, they will delay for a year or two, [then] pull [out]. And if there is at least one word that can be used against us, they will do it
