Police Release Names Of 9 Accident Victims Who Perished In Harare-Mutare Road Crash
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released the names of the 9 people who perished in a road accident that occured between Rusape and Mutare, at the 217km peg along the Harare-Mutare highway.
5 people died on the spot and another 4 died when they were being transported to the hospital. The accident happened on Tuesday when the driver of an Isuzu KB truck lost control of the vehicle after a burst tyre. The Isuzu truck was heading towards Mutare from Rusape.
The accident victims are mainly senior citizens and have been identified as:
- Caleb Siguwa (80) of Rusape
- Jairosi Chitovamombe (78) of Rusape
- Maria Mukuyi (60) of Rusape
- Norah Luwanja (58) of Odzi
- Betty Mukura (64) of Rusape
- Tizai Joseph Makaruse (67) of Rusape
- Gadloza Mandizha (61) of Rusape
- Johnson Tekere (72) of Rusape
- Betty Mudewaire (64) of Rusape
National police spokesperson assistant commissioner Paul Nyathi called on motorists to avoid speeding and overloading their vehicles when travelling. In a statement, assistant commissioner Nyathi said,
The Police urges drivers to avoid overloading vehicles and observe stipulated speed limits. The Zimbabwe Republic Police is saddened by the sudden loss of lives through road traffic accidents in the country. Drivers should be exemplary on the roads.
In a separate statement, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi also noted that the cumulative road traffic accident statistics for the 2021 Easter Holiday are much worse compared to the same period last year.
This year there was a total of 231 accidents in total compared to last year’s 178 accidents. 26 people lost their lives in 2021 compared to 8 people in 2020. The number of people injured in road traffic accidents in 2021 was more than seven-fold the number for 2020 with 149 people injured in 2021 against only 22 people injured in 2020.
