Coronavirus may directly target male genitals and lead to erectile dysfunction, a new study on monkeys has revealed.
Research on rhesus macaques has discovered the virus could infect tissue in the male genital tract – which implies symptoms such as impotence might be caused directly by the virus instead of by inflammation or fever.
The findings showed that coronavirus infected the penis, prostate and testicles as well as the surrounding blood vessels in the three monkeys.
The scientists, who used whole body scans to detect the sites of infection, said they were left stunned by the findings after they initially expected to detect it in places like the lungs.

Thomas Hope, the research paper’s senior author, commented: “The signal that jumped out at us was the complete spread through the male genital tract.
“We had no idea we would find it there.”
The professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago said the signal in the penis was “off the radar”, reports The New York Times.
Despite the findings being in just three monkeys, the research proved that the results were all consistent, he said.
The research that was carried out at the Tulane National Primate Research Center in Louisiana, has not yet been peer-reviewed and was published on Monday ( March 1).

Dr Hope said it is unclear whether the animals had symptoms in relation to the viral contamination of the male genital tract, such as low sperm counts and testosterone levels.
It has been reported that around 10 to 20 per cent of men who have contracted Covid have symptoms connected to male genital tract dysfunction.
Studies have shown that men infected with the virus are three to six times as likely as others to develop erectile dysfunction – which is believed to be a symptom of long Covid.
Other symptoms that have previously been reported include testicular pain, decreased fertility and hypogonadism, which is where the testes produce insufficient amounts of testosterone.
