The Spine-Chilling Story Of ‘The Silent Twins’ Who Only Spoke To Each Other

Meet June and Jennifer Gibbons. Quite possibly the most chilling twins you will ever encounter. Take a deep breath and stay calm because things are about to get a wee bit crazy in here.

Didn’t we all dream when we were 10 that our best friend was our sibling when we came up with terms and phrases that we only thought we would get? However, this dream turned eerie, sinister, and deadly, very soon, when it came to June and Jenifer Gibson. Barbados was born in 1963, known as the ‘silent twins’ of the Gibsons, and later moved to the United Kingdom where they were racially bullied at school from early on.

This led to a deep need for seclusion and loneliness, so the two of them agreed to interact only with each other as a ‘pact’. They also developed a language of their own that sounded like birds chirping. It came to be deciphered later on when it was decoded as a concoction of an expedited form of English followed by coordinated movements. Imagine living in a world where one person becomes an embodiment of protection and comfort, and now imagine that close-knitted relationship going rancid when the image creeps into envy and resentment. This is what happened with the twins, exactly. When matters of superiority and ‘I’m 10 minutes older than you’ came into play, what started as ‘pacts’ from childhood and a means of survival took a poisonous turn.

They started to dislike each other soon before they knew it. Loneliness brings a lot of pent-up expression with it, and that is why the twins turned to writing and literature as a way of expressing the dissatisfaction and rage within them. They wrote poems, novels, and sick dark things about each other: both of us are holding back each other. There’s a murderous gleam in her eye. Dear Lord, I’m terrified of her. She’s not usual here. She’s going to have a nervous breakdown. Someone is making her nuts. This is me.

When they turned 14, however, their family members and teachers wanted to isolate them in hopes that they would start communicating with other human beings, but this mostly backfired leading to the development of schizophrenia symptoms and total alienation from society by both of them. So they were brought back together where they’d lock themselves up and write in their room. Many of their Stephen-King-level-twisted novels were self-published, but sadly they were not rewarded for the same, so instead, they turned to crime. It started with small robberies, but they soon indulged in arson. They were diagnosed as psychopaths when they were taken to court, from where they were sent to the Broadmoor hospital, which was a psychiatric institution with high security.

Of course, even though both of them were housed on opposite ends of the building, the nurses and the institution staff found odd behavioral trends in the twins; they interacted somehow, eerily. They would do stuff like fasting alternately or being caught doing the same thing at the same time, which puzzled everyone, of course. The diary entries persisted, however, and were still to the effect of:

In each other’s possession, we have become fatal foes. We scheme, we plot, and who’s going to win? Every minute, a deadly day gets closer, coming to the point of imminent death, like hands slipping out against the night sky, evil motives, blood, a knife, a mincer. I tell myself, how can I get rid of a shadow of my own? Unthinkable or not impossible? Will I die without my shadow? Will I make a living without my shadow?

At one point, things got so bad from institution to institution that they even tried to kill each other. They soon discovered that if one of them died, there would be no escape from this pact. But they were relocated again after this realization, where they befriended Majorie Wallace, who went on to write their biography.

She became their only pal. One day Jenifer said, “I’m going to have to die,” Marjorie first took it as a joke, but pressed her for a reply to which Jenifer answered, “since we’ve agreed,” They went on to clarify that because they formed an agreement, they determined that one of them had to die the day they were released from the secure hospital to lead a normal life.

Thus, according to June, Jenifer became catatonic in 1993 when they moved again to another lower security hospital, putting her head on her side and ‘falling asleep’ with her eyes open. Jenifer was unresponsive and finally pronounced dead due to a sudden heart inflammation when they arrived at the facility. What was more baffling to realize was that the doctors f

June went on to live a normal life after Jenifer’s death.
