Landlord Gouges Out Tenant’s Eye Over US$3 Rental Arrears
A man from Victoria Falls was recently arrested after he gouged out his tenant’s eye over US$3 rent arrears.
Brian Karemba (40) landed in the hospital and lost an eye after Gift Kazembe turned villain and assaulted his tenant over the rent arrears
It is in the State’s case that Karemba was renting Kazembe’s house in Mkhosana and, in May, his monthly due was short by US$3.
On the day in question, at around 11 PM when he got back from Shoestrings nightclub, Kazembe reportedly went to Karemba’s room and asked him for his outstanding rentals.
Karemba informed his landlord that he did not have enough money to pay off his rentals as he was no longer working.
However, this did not go down well with Kazembe who picked a log and started assaulting Karemba.
Kazembe also punched Karemba several times all over the body before some of the tenants stopped him.
Karemba was quickly rushed to Victoria Falls Hospital after sustaining injuries on the face, head and a deep cut on the left eye.
Due to the severity of the injuries, he was transferred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) where he was admitted until an operation to remove the eye was done on June 17.
New Zimbabwe reports that Victoria Falls magistrate gave the case a longer remand to next month owing to Covid-19 regulations and to allow Karemba to heal after doctors removed his eye.
In an almost similar incident, iHarare reported that a fight over rent ended in tragedy after a Kwekwe landlord was stabbed to death by his 24-year-old tenant.
Victor Moyo was arrested after he killed his landlord Prayer Banda (22) of Mbizo 18 in Kwekwe following a clash over rent.
According to the police report, the now-deceased arrived home in the early hours forcing open a tenant’s bedroom door.
A misunderstanding ensued and the now-deceased produced a knife in an attempt to stab the tenant.
However, the now-deceased was overpowered and disarmed as tables turned with Moyo using the same knife to stab the landlord who bled profusely.
Banda tried to seek assistance from his neighbors but collapsed and died before he could get any help.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Moyo’s arrest.
