A change of name for the country would physically and psychologically reflect a new beginning.
Azeez Fashola alias Naira Marley, a Nigerian rapper, has reacted to claims that the country’s name should be changed from Nigeria to the United African Republic.
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives’ Special Committee on Constitution Review received a proposal to change Nigeria’s name from Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant.
He stated Nigeria’s current name was an imposition of its past colonial masters and should be changed when submitting the proposal to the committee during the southwest Zonal Public Hearing in Lagos on June 2, 2021.
According to Jokotoye, a change of name for the country would physically and psychologically reflect a new beginning.
At this crossroads in our history, it is mandatory that we change our name to reflect a new beginning which will be ushered in with a new constitution,” he said.
Reacting to the news, Naira Marley took to his social media page to welcome the idea, saying that he would compose the new national anthem.
”Omo Na me go sing the new national Anthem for UAR.”
