Icy blast of winter weather to hit New York metro area

The Greater New York metro area is due to get hit with a blast of icy winter weather late Monday, with rain turning into ice north and west of the Big Apple, forecasters said Monday.

While the five boroughs are expected to largely dodge the freezing mess that was predicted earlier, dipping temperatures later into the night are expected to create slippery conditions throughout parts of the region, the forecast said.

“The farther north and northwest you get from the city, the more icing there’s going to be,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines said. “West and north of I-287, you’ll see a few hours of icing Monday into Tuesday.”

Kines said rainfall overnight could turn into up to a half-inch of ice on portions of upstate New York, from Newburgh and up, and parts of North Jersey as temperatures dip.

He said those regions will go through “a few hours of icing” before the weather starts to clear up after daybreak Tuesday.

He said farther north, Albany could see a half-foot of snow.

“It’s going to get dicey for a while tonight up there,” Kines said.

Earlier forecasts had New York City facing similar weather-borne plight, with icy conditions expected to muck up the evening commute.

But Kines said a blast of warmer weather moved farther north than expected and will keep temperatures above freezing overnight.

He said rains will move in around 9 p.m. Monday and dissipate around daybreak — with the heaviest rainfall expected between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The bad news is that the New York City region is on track to get hit with another storm system later in the week, with a wintry mix expected to move in by Thursday.

“It’s probably going to be a variety of precipitation,” Kines said. “It likely comes in as snow but then either mixes with or changes to a sleet or rain — that type of situation. But at least at the front end, it looks like it’s going to be cold enough for snow.”
