A farmer from Gujarat committed suicide after heavy rains destroyed his crops. The 25-year-old man ended his life at the Dheduki village of Sayla Taluka in Surendranagar district on Tuesday. The farmer consumed pesticide to end his life.
The farmer was identified as Chandu Khamani. Khamani allegedly committed suicide after his sesame crop was destroyed. The suicide came to light three days after another farmer took the drastic step.
Khamani’s family members said that the man had been disturbed after his crops were destroyed. It was also alleged that the man’s wife had left him around 2 years ago and he had been struggling with depression.
RJ Gohil, sub-inspector of Sayla police station told The Times of India, “We are investigating as to which of the two was the real reason of suicide. ”
Three days ago, a farmer named Pratap Vegal committed suicide by consuming pesticide. Probe revealed that the man took his own life as he was struggling financially. However, the villagers claimed that the man ended his life due to crop failure.
These farmer suicides took place while there was a massive uproar in the country regarding the passing of two crucial farm bills in the Rajya Sabha. Over two dozen farmer organisations extended their support to ‘Bharat Bandh’ and announced that they would continue to protest against the bills on September 25 as well.
The Bharatiya Kisan Union said, “On September 25, there will be farmers’ curfew, blockade and till purchase of products as per MSP is guaranteed in the law, the agitation will go on. ”
