A ‘golden boy’ has been found dead inside a lake after he went fishing, his heartbroken parent paid him a heartfelt tribute.
A body believed to be that of Samson Price, 18, from Goose Green, was discovered after emergency services were called to Scotsman’s Flash south of Wigan town centre on Sunday afternoon.
Mum Rosanna and dad Samson snr have told the Manchester Evening News their son was a “wonderful young man” who they nicknamed “Golden Boy”.
The devastated family say his death – after he told them he was going fishing – has left them all “broken into pieces”.
He never had an enemy,” Rosanna said. “He never held a grudge and couldn’t be upset. He just had no badness in him, he just wanted everyone to enjoy themselves and for everyone to be happy.
“He was so proud to be from Wigan. He loved Wigan
“He was everybody’s friend. People gravitated towards him.
“One of his friends set up a Go Fund Me page because they wanted him to have a send-off like a king because of the impact he had on their life.
He was just loved by everybody.
“He was so spoilt. His nickname was Golden Boy because he was spoiled and got away with everything.
“He lit up a room.
“There will never be another like him.
“He was the light of my life and now the light’s gone.”
The Go Fund Me page urging people to donate in his memory has already raised nearly £3,000 as tributes poured in for the rugby-mad teenager.
Floral tributes have also been left close to the scene of the tragedy.
Samson jnr, who had a 20 year-old sister Atlanta, was a keen fan and player of both rugby union and rugby league.
He was a big music fan and loved Arctic Monkeys and Liam Gallagher.
The former St Matthew’s Primary and Hawkley Hall High school pupil had just started a plumbing course at Wigan and Leigh College and had a jet washing business with his friend.
He was “very clever” and “had a bright future ahead of him”, his family said.
Samson jnr’s parents said they last saw him at around 4pm on Saturday when he told them he was going fishing.
“His sister is devastated,” Rosanna added.
“His granddad is in bits, I just don’t know how we’re going to cope without him.
“He was the heart of our family and the heart’s dropped out.
“I don’t know what to say. He was just our world.”
Samson snr said: “He was a wonderful young man, he had so many friends who loved and him and cared about him.
“We’re just broken now, broken into pieces.”
A Greater Manchester Police source said formal identification has not yet taken place, but police believe the body to be Samson jnr’s.
The force said in a statement: “Enquiries are in their infancy and officers remain at the scene whilst investigation work is carried out.
“Officers are keeping an open mind as the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are established.”
Three teenagers – aged 17, 18 and 19 – have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
They are in custody being questioned by detectives.
