A Marondera woman reportedly at the centre of a cheap labour export ring recently appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court charged under the Traffic Persons Act.
This comes after two women were subjected to slavery and exploitation in Oman where they had been promised better jobs and salaries.
Farisisai Mupeti, of Rusike Phase 3 in Marondera, was not asked to plead when she appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda.
The matter was rolled over to June 1 after she was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
It is alleged that sometime in November 2021, Mupeti misrepresented to Miriam Zihumo while acting in connivance with one Lincell Allimonis, who is still at large and is believed to be in Oman, that there was a job opportunity with a lucrative salary in Dubai.
Allimos reportedly sent Zihumo air tickets and a Visa but her air ticket that was written in Arabic showed the destination as Oman, not Dubai.
On arrival, it is the State’s case that Zihumo’s passport was taken away by men acting in connivance with Mupeti after she landed in Oman.
According to State papers, she was “sold” to a man who would be her “employer.”
The court heard that she was denied food, worked around the clock and was kept indoors for three months.
Zihumo managed to return home after lying to the man holding her that she had a wedding planner in Zimbabwe and that her family had bought her the tickets.
Mupeti allegedly used the same trick on Isabel Mushoriwa who was subjected to abuse for three weeks and only escaped after lying that her mother had died, ZimLive reports.
