Family Of Girl (14) Who Died During Childbirth Offers The Young Sister (9) To Her Husband As Replacement: New Details Emerge
Following reports that a 14-year-old girl, Memory Machaya, died during childbirth at Johanne Marange Apostolic church shrine, information reaching The Manica Post suggests that the polygamous Machaya family is planning to offer their nine-year-old daughter to the in-laws as her late sister’s replacement.
Memory Machaya was allegedly forced out of school while doing Form One in Mhondoro and was married off to Evans Momberume, the man who allegedly impregnated her.
She died around 9 AM on the 15th of July and was secretly buried two hours later after her family was denied access to their daughter.
She left behind a baby boy who is said to be in the custody of his father Momberume.
Following Memory’s tragic death, the family is allegedly already planning to offer Memory’s younger sister as a replacement using the chigadzamapfihwa tradition.
Chigadzamapfihwa is when a man is offered a replacement wife by his in-laws after his first wife passes away.
Speaking during an interview with The Manica Post on Thursday, the family spokesperson Alice Mabika said their family is devastated by Memory’s death.
Alice revealed that from the information they managed to gather from Momberume’s sister, Memory complained of a headache on the fateful day before she passed away.
The church “midwives” who attended to her allegedly diagnosed that she had ulcers in the mouth and nose. They are said to have rubbed her mouth with salt while pouring paraffin into her nose.
We were told that five ‘midwives’ attended to Memory and rubbed salt in her mouth while pouring paraffin into her nose. We were told that she had a seizure and hit her head on the ground.
She died soon after delivering her baby boy and the church members went on to bury her without involving us,” Alice said.
Memory’s mother, Shy Mabika, and her other family relatives were barred from entering the church shrine by the institution’s security details after their daughter was buried.
Alice bemoaned how Memory died a painful death after the church denied her medical attention at her hour of need. The family hopes that one-day justice will prevail.
Meanwhile, pressure groups have since called on the relevant authorities to arrest Momberume for impregnating a minor and the church leaders for Memory’s death.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is already investigating Memory’s death.
