The gunmen were also seen shooting repeatedly in the air towards Owerri’s Orji axis and Spibat road.
During Mass at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Amakohia in Owerri, the Imo State capital, some unidentified gunmen provoked a rush among parishioners.
The shooters, dressed in black and wearing masks, were seen in large groups on the Amakohia/Orlu route.
They were freely matching and shooting randomly in the air to scare everyone away, including the police and army, according to our state correspondent.
As people scurried for safety, the parade created significant stampedes at both the church and the modern market in Amakohia.
The church gate, on the other hand, was promptly locked to prevent the gun-wielding men from entering the premises.
The march lasted roughly 40 minutes, forcing cars and pedestrians to take detours to their destinations.
According to reports, the gunmen were also seen shooting repeatedly in the air towards Owerri’s Orji axis and Spibat road.
Meanwhile, no injuries were reported since residents believed the police and soldiers were their targets.
