The rushed sale of  English Premier League team Chelsea FC has been blocked, after club’s Russian owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the United Kingdom government today in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian is a close friend of  Vladimir Putin.

Abramovich, who has owned the team since 2003, put the club up for sale last week to duck the threat of sanctions which was raised in the British Parliament.
The Russian valued the club at around £4billion.

The imposition of sanctions on him makes it impossible for him to sell the club.

Abramovich’s assets, including Chelsea, have been frozen and he is now prohibited to do any transactions with UK individuals and businesses.

The Russian has been given a travel ban as well as  having transport sanctions imposed on him.

BBC reports that the UK government said it will issue a special licence that will allow fixtures to be fulfilled, staff to be paid and existing ticket-holders to attend matches.

As things stand, Chelsea has also been blocked from selling any more tickets, and the club’s merchandise shop will also be shut down.

Chelsea fans who had bought season-long tickets can still attend games for which they have tickets.

Sky Sports News has revealed that Chelsea and government officials will meet on Thursday.

Abramovich has over the years pumped more than £1.5bn into Chelsea during a trophy-laden 18-and-a-half years at the helm.

UK Secretary of State for Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) tweeted:
