In another life, these South African celebrities and entertainers could have been global icons in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field.

Instead, they chose to follow their hearts and pursue their passions in the entertainment sector.

Thirty-three year old actor Nkosinathi ‘Nay Maps’ Maphalala is an actor, model, singer, and entrepreneur. He gained television prominence as Mxolisi Mdletshe on the South African hit series Uzalo. He has also played acting roles in The Queen (Dingane) , Isibaya (Tshepo) and Muvhango (Zenzele) .

Nay Maps holds a degree in Information Technology and Software Programming from the University of Pretoria. After graduating, he could not get a job matching his qualifications and ended up joining The Lifestyle Show on Channel ANN7.

Dr Tumi has carved his name out as one of the best soulful Gospel singers, belting out hits like Nothing Without You and collecting awards along the way.

The Gospel singer’s title is not for clout or from a Doctorate degree. He is an actual medical doctor.

He studied medicine at the Medical University of Southern Africa (Mendusa) for six years. Dr Tumi started his own medical practice after completing his studies.

Musa Mthombeni

Musa became a television darling at a very tender age, presenting on kids shows on SABC’s YoTV.

He graduated from Witswatersrand University and became a qualified medical doctor in 2017. This was during his time as a Trending SA presenter on SABC 3.

Rapper IFani came back into the limelight last year after releasing a song with Big Xhosa. He had decided to put down the mic and leave music in 2015 after two lukewarm songs.

Despite this, IFani is a qualified tech professional. The rapper holds an honors degree in Computer Science and a BSc Computer Engineering degree from the University of Cape Town.
