Caribbean volcano La Soufrière threatens to erupt as island of St Vincent evacuated

Authorities on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent have issued a red alert and begun evacuating people over fears a volcano will imminently explode.

It is understood that the La Soufriere volcano has been glowing for days due to seismic activity on the island.

Emergency officials on the island have said that cruise ships will be used to bring people to safety, according to the New York Post.

Neighbouring island St Lucia has offered to help the authorities in St Vincent and the Grenadines if it is needed.

The country’s National Emergency Management Organisation said on Twitter that: “Evacuation by land and sea continues in preparation for an explosive eruption of La Soufriere Volcano.”
