Brothers, 19 & 21, Blame TV Show For Shooting Dead Four Members Of Own Family
In a chilling development, two brothers shot dead four members of their own family before turning the guns on themselves in a horrific murder-suicide pact.
19-year-old Farhan Towhid and his 21-year-old brother, Tanvir Towhid, left behind a rather bizarre suicide note partially explaining their actions and motivations.
In the suicide note, Farhan said that he was disappointed with the way the sitcom The Office had ended. He said that the Steve Carrell comedy was one of “four very important issues I encountered throughout my life.”
He then goes on to complain at length about how the last seasons of the show were poor and about how the show “should’ve ended when [Carell’s character] Michael left.”
The suicide note which was posted on Instagram started with the words “Hey everyone, I killed myself and my family.” Farhan also called gun control in the United States a “joke” and claimed that his 21-year-old brother had easily acquired a gun despite the fact that he was clinically depressed.
“All my brother had to do was go to the gunshop, say something about wanting a gun for home defence, sign some forms, and that was it.
“There was a question asking if he had any mental illnesses but—get this—he lied.
‘He literally just said no. They didn’t ask for proof or if he was taking any medication (he was),” he wrote.
“Thanks for making the process so easy,” he said.
In the letter, he also said he killed his family for their own good because of how sad his suicide would make them.
“I love my family. I genuinely do. And that’s exactly why I decided to kill them,”
“Allow me to explain. Anyone who knew me knew that I operate on pure logic.
“Every decision I make is based on a pros-cons list, including the one to kill my family.”
“If I killed myself, they would be miserable. They would spend the rest of their lives feeling guilt, despair, and a multitude of other adjectives that mean sad.
“Instead of having to deal with the aftermath of my suicide, I could just do them a favour and take them with me. None of us would ever have to feel sad ever again,” he wrote.
The two brothers are believed to have shot dead their father, Towhidul Islam, 54, mother Iren Islam, 56, and 77-year-old grandmother Altafun Nessa, who was visiting from Bangladesh, police told CBS DFW.
They also killed Farhan’s 19-year-old twin sister, keen Farbin — who reportedly had a full scholarship to New York University (NYU) — before turning the guns on themselves.
All six victims were discovered by police dead with gunshot wounds during a wellness check at about 1 a.m. on Monday in Allen Texas. It was not immediately clear what guns were used.
In his suicide note, Farhan also admitted that he had been battling depression together with his brother.
“I’ve had depression since 9th grade (2016). Not the ‘damn, I failed my test’ depression everyone says they have, more like a ‘I only cut myself twice today, that’s better than usual,’”
Farhan wrote, saying his brother’s condition “was much worse.”
“The dude is aa f—ing genius but is too depressed and socially anxious to do anything with it.”
“No matter what I do, I just can’t be happy.”
