Bloke confesses to fake murder so police will come and clear snow off his drive

A Ukranian man who wanted his snow-covered road cleared and couldn’t face doing himself “confessed” to a murder in the hope that police would do the job when they came to arrest him.

The man called the northern Chernihiv regional police on Saturday, February 13 and told them he had killed his mother’s partner by stabbing him in the chest.

He told them the victim had collapsed, and was not breathing.

“But at the same time,” said police spokesperson Yuliya Kovtun, ”he immediately warned the police that they should come with a snowplough, because there is no other way to get to him.”

Ukraine has seen record snowfall in recent weeks

The village of Grybova Rudnya, in Ukraine, been hit with record snowfall in recent days, with some 20 inches blanketing the area.

In fact attending officers decided to try to get to the “crime scene” in a 4×4 vehicle and successfully arrived at the man’s house.

“Immediately after arriving,” Ms Kovtun said, “they discovered that the relative was indeed at the house, but in one piece and unharmed. No one had attacked him.”

The “murderer” immediately owned up to the deception, telling police that the local council had ploughed the road earlier that day but that he “was not satisfied with the quality of the clearing”.

The miscreant faces a small fine of around 119 hryvnias (a very reasonable £3) for reporting a false complaint.

The former Soviet state of Ukraine is, along with Moldova, ranked as one of the poorest countries in Europe. It suffers from a very high poverty rate as well as severe political corruption.
