Barack Obama’s Step-Grandmother Mama Sarah Dies In Kenya
In a sad development, Former United States President Barack Obama Kenyan step-grandmother, Sarah Obama has died.
Mama Sarah, as she was called, passed away early in the morning today at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital in Kisumu where she was hospitalized. She died at the age of 99.
Her daughter Marsat Onyango announced her death today but did not reveal the cause of her death.
A family spokesman Sheik Musa Ismail revealed that Mama Sarah had been ill for a week before she was taken to the hospital. He also revealed she had tested negative for coronavirus.
Ismail said President Barack Obama has already been informed of her death and he has since sent his condolences.
She will be buried Tuesday before midday and the funeral will be held under Islamic rites.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed his condolences over the passing away of Mama Sarah, describing her as an icon of family values. He said:
The passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to our nation. We’ve lost a strong, virtuous woman, a matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values.
… She was a philanthropist who mobilised funds to pay school fees for the orphans.
Mama Sarah, as the matriarch of Barack Obama, was a philanthropist who promoted education for girls and orphans.
She was the second wife of President Obama’s grandfather and helped raise his father, Barack Obama, Sr.
