In a case of suspected baby mix up, a woman from Harare was reportedly given a baby girl after giving birth to a baby boy at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.

The mother(name not supplied) is demanding for a DNA test to be conducted so that she can find her baby boy. She insists she gave birth to a baby boy but was given a baby girl.

Even the birth record indicates that she was indeed blessed with a baby boy  instead of a girl.

Hospital Clinical Director Hopewell Mungani,  confirmed that there was baby mix-up discrepancy incident which happened at Sally Mugabe maternity ward. He said;

“The hospital received a report from maternity ward in connection with a baby mix up.”

“The case is now under investigation and we are expecting the correct position in the next two days.”

Speaking following the harrowing development, family spokesperson Inviolata Shamuyarira revealed that the woman was shown a baby boy upon giving birth. She only discovered that the midwife had given her the wrong baby on dressing the baby.

After she informed the nurses on duty about the discrepancy, instead of notifying the hospital authorities about the mix up, the nurses interrogated her and forced her to breastfeed the baby girl when she was sure that the baby she gave birth to was a boy.

“The nurses on duty went on to force her to breast feed the baby she questioned about its paternity although their birth record shows a baby boy born to her,” she said.

H-Metro reveals that the hospital carried DNA tests for the baby girl and the test results indicated that the baby girl belonged to the woman in question.

However, the family members including the parents are against the results. They are already seeking for a court order so that they can engage a private DNA company to conduct the tests.

“We do not accept the DNA results they carried and we want to engage a private DNA company.” Shamuyarira said

The family also want the hospital to carry out DNA tests to all the babies who were born on the day in question.

Following the mix up, the woman left maternity ward without a baby due to the emotional abuse she suffered at the hands of the nurses who were on duty.
