APGA Primary: The Intrigues That Helped Soludo

The intervention of the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment saved the reporters who were not accredited for the primary.

In the midst of heavy security, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) held its primary election on Wednesday, producing Prof Charles Soludo as its candidate for the November 6 Anambra governorship race.

At the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, 812 delegates from the 326 Wards in the 21 local government areas of the State were accredited before proceeding to the Prof Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Center, where they voted aboard chartered luxury buses.

Angry candidates like Hon Chukwuma Umeoji, who was supposedly disqualified by the APGA, and Dr. Akachukwu Nwankpo, who was cleared to run, were prominent absentees from the event.

Meanwhile, the heavy presence of security operatives from the Police, Military, Department of State Service (DSS) among others made the arena look like a war zone especially for APGA enthusiasts against Soludo.

The security men nearly outnumbered the party delegates, with the State governor, Chief Willie Obiano in attendance.

Many journalists were harassed and chased out of the venue by the police operatives who insisted that they were acting on the orders from the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the Anambra state governor, Chief Obiano who is the leader of APGA and had been believed to be backing Soludo.
